Overview
The Private Pilot Licence (PPL) is the classic world recognized pilot qualification that was up until the launch of the NPPL the first licence you would gain as an aviator. The PPL is still required if you wish to train as a commercial pilot but you can just upgrade from a NPPL. The PPL follows exactly the same training format as the NPPL except the are 9 ground exams as apposed to the 6 for NPPL and there are some additional long navigation exercises that must be completed dual and solo to make the course minimum of 40 hour flight training before taking your PPL flight test.

Course Breakdown
Practical Skills
The flight instruction element of the PPL (A) course consists of a minimum of 40 hours of flight instruction including:
- 25 hours of dual flight instruction
- 10 hours of supervised solo flight time
- Of the 10 hours supervised solo flight time, a minimum of 5 hours must be solo cross-country flight time
- A solo cross country flight of at least 150 nautical miles, during which a full stop landing is made at two airfields different from the departure airfield.

Theoretical Knowledge
The theoretical knowledge element of the PPL (A) course consists of nine subjects which can be studied through self-learning or classroom based (Ground School).

Navigation
Flight Planning and Performance
Aircraft General Knowledge
Principles of Flight
Human Performance
All exams must be passed within a period of 18 months (counted from the end of the calendar month when the first examination was taken). Once all exams have been passed, the certifications remain valid for 24 months. The student pilot must achieve the score of a ‘Pass’ in all written examinations before taking the subsequent Skills Test.
There is no minimum or maximum calendar time for completing the PPL (A) course.
